Cold War Exhibit

The Cold War Exhibit (CWE) opened its doors in September 2015 to elevate and honour the vital role the Royal Canadian Air Force played in preserving peace in both Europe and North American during the Cold War years of 1949-1989(1991). The facility consists of two simulated Hardened Air Shelters (HASs) containing three generations of Cold War era jets – the venerable Canadair-built F-86 Sabre; its NATO replacement, the Canadair-built CF-104 Starfighter and the current generation CF-18 Hornet. On display, a few steps to the west of the CWE is the fourth jet, the Canadair-built CF-5 Freedom Fighter.

The remainder of space within the HASs is allocated to display boards and artefacts chronicling the technological, professional, psychological, and social aspects of the RCAF during the Cold War.

Cold War Memorial

A poignant feature of the Cold War Exhibit is the Cold War Memorial Wall dedicated to the 937 RCAF personnel who lost their lives during the period known as the Cold War ( 1949-1989). The memorial is represented by a physical wall of names and an associated digital database.

Guide to the Cold War Memorial

The Cold War Memorial commemorates over 900 members of Canada's Air Force who died during the Cold War between 1949 and 1989.

The primary feature of the Memorial is a searchable database that includes an alphabetical listing of every individual, along with their Name, Rank, Awards, Squadron/Unit, Event, Cemetery, Date of Death and Age.

Navigating the Memorial

At the top of the Memorial page is a Alphabetical list of letter links. Clicking on one of these letters will display all the surnames that start with that letter. The Search field can also be used to enter specific names, such as firstnames or lastnames. For best results use single words with no blank spaces. Click Reset to restore the display.
