Air Force Gallery
The Air Force Gallery chronicles the story of Canada’s Air Force through artefacts, models and interactive displays. The Royal Canadian Air Force was founded in April 1924, and continues in its modern role, continuing the magnificent legacy of Canada’s war-time contributions.
Begin your journey in our main gallery – where the history of the First World War, the Second World War, and the current era are highlighted. Step back in time to the foundation of aerial warfare during the First World War, meet some of the Canadian aces who dared to master these new and dangerous machines. Learn about the creation of the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1924 and the bush pilots who took to the sky to explore our vast wilderness during the interwar period. Venture further into the gallery and be immersed in the experience of the Second World War Bomber Command. Walk beneath the underside of a Lancaster bomber and hear the air raid sirens and explosions. Finally, finish your journey by visiting Stalag Luft III prison camp in our Great Escape exhibit. Walk through the barracks witness everyday life in a POW camp, learn these famous escapees’ stories, and finally follow in their footsteps sneaking down the secret tunnel to make a daring escape.
